Reiki Frequently Asked Questions

what is reiki?

Reiki-kanji-sml
Reiki, the word, is Japanese.

It is written with 2 Japanese kanji (kanji means Chinese characters). These kanji mean “spiritual energy”.

The top kanji is rei – (lit. Japanese) spiritual or sacred

The bottom kanji is ki – (lit. Japanese) energy

The word Reiki means Spiritual Energy. And then we also have the "System of Reiki" which is the practise of working with the Spiritual Energy.

So the word Reiki relates to the energy and the term "System of Reiki" relates to the teachings (meditations and symbols and mantras and so forth) that make up the Japanese energetic system we practise in order to develop our own inner spirit.

Reiki was founded by Usui Mikao of Japan. The system was originally taught direct from Usui to student and there were no specific records kept to indicate a date when the practice began. However from research conducted it is believed to have been well in existance by 1922.

Reiki is a gentle, effective energy healing method, which treats the whole individual, not just the symptoms of a disease. With Reiki the practitioner acts as a conduit for the healing energy of the universe to flow through his/her hands to the individual or animal, causing a shift toward health at the deepest levels. It restores balance and harmony to a person or animal’s entire being: physical, mental, emotional, and/or spiritual. Reiki can also be used to accelerate personal growth and healing and as importantly can be a practise for maintaining wellness so there is no “dis-ease”.

The beauty of Reiki as a healing system is that it is simple, non-invasive, and stress-free, yet highly effective.

what happens in a treatment?

You arrive, be greeted by the practitioner and fill in a client form (if it is your first visit). After a brief chat you slip off your shoes and then lay down on the treatment table, and relax.  Many people fall into a light sleep or a deeply relaxed state. Some people feel the energy some just feel the most beautiful sense of peace. It's all about giving space to come back into the true you.
